Accusations fly freely as the Resistance tries to figure out who the spies are and the spies try to deflect the guilt to other members. Mechanically simple, the Resistance is easily explained to new players but still very, very fun and this makes it very well suited to my standard Game Night environment. I love introducing newcomers to a game they can play with only a deck of cards.
The Game
The Resistance is played in rounds where the current team leader selects a group of players they want to go on a mission. After they've selected the group, every player argues about whether or not they think the group should go because, if they take a spy along the mission fails. Every player votes on what they think.Resistance members must be on their toes to figure out who the spies are, while the spies need to bluff their way to victory. It's a great time! Theme
Deception and Deduction are the themes of The Resistance and the game has both in spades. The Resistance members all try to deduce who they think are spies and why, while the spies try to throw them off of the track.Accessibility
On first blush, the rules seem a little complicated but don't be fooled, they really couldn't be much easier. The longest part of setup is taking out the proper cards from a standard 52-card deck of playing cards and the rules are incredibly easy to explain to newcomers.The only hits to accessibility come in the game's very specific number of players and number of people to go on each mission. The Resistance can be played with no less than five players and no more than ten; the lower limit is more strict, but after ten players there are other hidden role games that work better. The number of people that go on each mission is hard to memorize because it changes for each mission depending on how many people are playing. I have a Index Card printed out with a cheat sheet for these rules.
Fun
As a mostly social game with very few actual mechanics, The Resistance is incredibly fun game. It's one of the truest forms of party game to me: an excuse to bring friends together and socialize.As a Resistance member, it's nerve wracking trying to determine who the spies are. As a spy, it's incredibly satisfying when you have the resistance certain that one of their own is a spy. Both sides of the coin are fun, though I prefer being a spy.
Replayability
Seemingly endless. Game Nights occasionally take breaks from The Resistance to play other games, but it's always brought back. Always.Recommendation
Play It, No Seriously.I can't recommend this game enough, especially as basically free game. I've even included instructions that you can print out to try this game the next time you have at least four friends to play with. The only people I can't recommend it to are those who have qualms about lying to their friends' faces, even in a game.
There are two boxed versions of The Resistance with added types of cards. As of yet, I have not played either because even the base game is so much fun. Look forward to reviews of those in the future when I try to make this game even more fun than it already is.
